BUS 110 W9 Reflection

The study this week is all about disciple leadership. I love this type of leadership! I have worked in several jobs where the leaders were less than stellar (most of them honestly) and I have worked as a parent for almost 15 years - 3 of those homeschooling the 4 kids in my home while going to college myself. The times that I have enjoyed my work most have been when there is clear communication between the boss and the employees or students. This gives room for everyone to learn together as well as accomplish the task for the job.

Frank Levinson Finisar talks about how his job hires "nice" people and not so much "ethical". His reasoning is that nice people are ethical and if you have a bunch of nice people on your team, your team will work together much better. This is such a unique perspective on hiring people and I think that if we could, as a society, focus more on being nice and moral as individuals we would promote that attitude in others and our society would be majorly blessed from the outcome.

President Kim B. at the Clark Brigham Young University–Idaho Commencement December 14, 2007 talks about Leadership with a small "L":

"The call to be a disciple-leader is a call to minister and to serve.  It is a call to lead as Christ leads.  It is leadership with a small “L”—the kind of leadership that builds and lifts and inspires through kindness and love and unselfish devotion to the Lord and His work.  It is the kind of leadership that we need at every level of every kind of organization in the world and in every ward and stake in the Church.  It is the kind of leadership you will need to build an eternal family."

Having the opportunity to teach my children how to be disciple leaders is one of my greatest blessings. Tonight we had a fun activity at church where we were awarded points based on our family history work through the month of February. Our family earned over 1400 points together -  the oldest 3 kids did most of the work so I let them use their points to bid on the auctions they wanted. We ended up not winning any of the auctions, on purpose, the little kids were having fun bidding on things, so my kids used their points to purchase more raffle tickets. They received over 150 more tickets! That was more than anyone at the meeting! My sweet children decided that they wanted to share the tickets with all of the kids there. They gifted 3 tickets to every child and some of the grown-ups and then a handful to the missionaries. I was so proud of how quickly they offered to share with everyone else! We ended up with a plate of cookies and a pie at the end of the night and everyone was so happy with what they walked away with. We are sharing the cookies with 2 other families this weekend who weren't able to come to the meeting and are already looking for ways to serve other families.

I am grateful that we have such a wonderful example of a leader in our Savior and that it is rather simple to follow that example.
