BUS 110 W7 Reflection
The reading this week came from the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey. There were a couple of habits that really resonated with me, namely begin with the end in mind, put first things first, and seek first to understand then to be understood. I find that when I start a new task, I work better if I can physically write down the steps to accomplish the goal. If I can write down every small and big task, I can feel accomplished as I mark them off. It goes hand in hand with putting first things first - by writing down the tasks I can rework what gets done in what order so I can be productive but still focus on the requirements (sometimes I get distracted by the fun tasks and ignore the difficult ones). Habit 5, seek first to understand, then to be understood, is a little different. When I'm working on a personal goal, this is less likely to be at the forefront of how I accomplish my tasks. I have to remember that everything I do in life affects others and when I recognize this, I am more likely to be conscious of how my choices affect others and I can adjust if needed to clear up any needless frustration before it happens. One thing I learned from the reading this week is to find joy every step of the way. This goes well with habit 6, synergize. When you take a moment to slow down and really learn from the things that are happening around you, you can really get an understanding of who you are and what your strengths and weaknesses are. I love this graphic from The New Happy that they shared on their Facebook page this week. The image is a grey circle contrasted against a bright, colorful flower building from that circle asking "does it make you feel like this, or like this?" I would like to say that the thought behind it goes well with the 7 habits from the book. Do your actions make you feel like the person you want to be?
