Create a Life of Meaning
This week, I watched a snippet of a lecture by Randy Pausch. It's his last lecture and he talks about his accomplishments and how he got there. I think the thing that stands out to me most is that Randy decided, as a child, that he wanted to build with Disney and worked hard to get the assumed pre-requisite learning. When he applied, the response was "no thank you" and was a little bit of a "setback" for him. But he didn't let that stop him - he found ways to use his learning to accomplish his dreams of walking in zero gravity, eventually designing a theme park ride for Disney, and more. I think he was able to accomplish these things because he set a goal and then followed the SMART steps to make it happen.
He dreamed BIG
When I was growing up, I had dreams of being adventurous, being a veterinarian, a mom, a musician, and probably more than I can remember. These dreams have led me to be a mom of 4 who plays the piano and french horn (when I practice) and I can lead music easily. But when I was given the chance to shadow a cat veterinarian, I almost passed out when watching a biopsy - I did not want to be a vet anymore. My dreams have adjusted as I have matured and grown as a person. I plan to have chickens one day that I can watch from my porch at the very least!
I have done a bucket list this week as part of my lesson and here is what I came up with:
One thing I noticed about this list is it is adventures or things to own/do and not necessarily who I want to be. I have a difficult time making a bucket list that includes things that I cannot easily accomplish or measure - I do have goals to become a nicer, more kind person. Even more Christ-like. But I cannot measure that off the top of my head, so it's not a real goal, it's a hope and something I work toward every day knowing that I will probably make some sort of progress even if it's backward.
I did have the opportunity to practice being a mermaid this week, my birthday present from my in-laws came in early! So I've spent a couple of hours at the pool with my kids practicing swimming and holding my breath longer underwater. Don't judge the mask too harshly - our local pool is frequented by ducks and the water is NOT clean enough for open eyes without protection.
